DEBBY L. NEWSLOW

Debby, a native of Needham, Massachusetts, is President of D.L. Newslow & Associates, Inc., located in Orlando, Florida. Debby is the author of The ISO 9000 Quality System: Applications in Food and Technology, released by John Wiley & Sons Publishing in February 2001 and also the author of a HACCP-based chapter in the 2003 John Wiley & Sons release of the Food Safety Compendium. She completed her second book, titled Food Safety Management Programs - Applications, Best Practices, and Compliance, published by CRC Press/Taylor and Francis Group in 2013. She also wrote the chapter "Food Safety and Quality Management Systems" for the Encyclopedia of Food Safety (Elseveir 2013).

 

​A Food Science & Technology degree from the University of Florida prepared her to begin a career as a Quality Control Manager with T.G. Lee Foods, a division of Dean Foods. In 1985, Debby joined The Coca-Cola Company in its Minute Maid Division (CCF) as a Research & Development Food Scientist. In 1987, Debby transferred to Quality Assurance as a Corporate Auditor and Project Specialist, where she was instrumental in developing a GMP audit program, creation of a company standard Quality Assurance Manual and assisted with ISO 9002:1994 certifications of three different process operations.

In 1995, Debby joined Lloyd’s Register Quality Assurance (LRQA) as a certified ISO 9001 Lead Auditor and later became a certified FSSC 22000 Lead Auditor. Debby worked full time (3.5 years) and as a sub-contractor (18+ years) with LRQA as a lead auditor qualified to perform audits in food (including high-risk foods), chemical, and packaging operations for ISO 9001, ISO 22000, FSSC 22000, and HACCP.

 

Debby has been involved with ISO certification and consulting activities in a wide range of industries, pet food, dairy, beverage, soup, spice, candy, sugar, citrus, meats, poultry, seafood, tobacco, chemicals, packaging, and cosmetics. She has assisted and consulted with more 1000 companies, including: M & M Mars, Mars Pet Food, Uncle Ben’s Rice, Coca-Cola, New Zealand Milk Products, Nielsen-Massey Vanillas, Domino Sugar, Joseph E. Seagram & Sons, Printpack, SE Container, Inc., Barton Solvents, Hiram Walker, Mead Johnson, Campbell’s Soup, Tropicana, Reckitt Benckiser, Louis Dreyfus, Wixon, Consolidated Paper, Pepperidge Farm, Grace Kennedy, Dairy Industries, Southern Gardens Citrus, Bacardi, Cargill, Wrigley, Citrosuco, Fresh Express – Chiquita, Cutrale, Chocolate Accents and many more.  

 

Debby’s main interests are assisting food, chemical, and various other industries with business system development and maintenance activities. This includes ISO compliance (9001, 14001, 45001, 22000), FSSC 22000, SQF, BRCGS, GMP, HACCP and Food Hygiene, HACCP Prerequisite Programs, Crisis Management, and other related systems/processes. Debby and her team also perform Food Grade Tanker Audits including those compliant with JPA. When not assisting companies with development/maintenance activities, she is teaching workshops based on these topics.

 

Along with her comprehensive textbooks and focused chapters, Debby has published numerous articles in such trade journals as Cultured Dairy Products Journal; Dairy, Food, and Environmental Sanitation; Dairy Foods; and Food Quality. A presenter at meetings and short courses sponsored by such organizations as University of Florida, IFT, SME, Citrus Engineers, Agricultural Consultants, Food Safety Summit, Food Quality, Food Safety Tech, and the American Spice Trade Association, she has also served on the Executive Board of Florida IFT. She has served on executive boards of the “Citrus Division” and “Quality Assurance Division” of IFT and Cultured Dairy Products Association and has been a member of the development team for the ASQ-HACCP certification exam and the NRFSP HACCP manager exam.

 

Debby is also Lead Instructor for the FSPCA Preventive Controls for Human Food, FSPCA Preventive Controls for Animal Food and for FSMA Foreign Supplier Verification Program (FSVP). She has been requested to produce Food Safety Management Programs – Applications, Best Practices and Compliance, Volume 2 to be published by CRC Press/Taylor and Francis Group.

 

Debby was during her auditing years an IRCA Certified Quality Assurance Lead Assessor, an American Society of Quality (ASQ) Certified Quality Auditor, Certified HACCP Auditor and Certified Quality Manager. She is active in IFT, FLA IFT, IAFP, FAFP and a previous active member of the American Society for Quality (ASQ). In 2003, Debby was the recipient of the Roy Wilson Sparkle Award presented by the Florida Division of IFT for her contributions to sanitation in the citrus industry. In 2007, Debby received the Bob Olsen Award for her distinguished contributions and service to Florida Section IFT. In 2008, Debby received the Sanitarian of the Year Award from the Florida Association for Food Protection. She received the 2013 Food Safety Leadership Award for Training presented by NSF International at the Food Safety Summit.

 

In Debby’s spare time she enjoys her rescued animals and being at, in or on the ocean.
